New Bedford Whaling NHP brings author Richard Louv to New Bedford, MA

Park partners to form new Southcoast Outdoor Network

New Bedford, MA— Working with partners from across the healthcare, outdoor recreation and conservation spectrum, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park brought nationally-renowned author and environmental advocate Richard Louv to New Bedford, MA on March 29, 2012.  Louv’s speech inspired an audience of over 200 people of all ages at Tifereth Israel Congregation in New Bedford.  Author of Last Child in the Woods and The Nature Principle, Louv spoke on the diminishing human connection with nature and how communities and individuals can work together to change that.

Recognizing the potential power and impact of their collaboration, the park and partners who had come together around this event formed the Southcoast Outdoor Network to pursue other opportunities to  connect individuals, families, and communities with the outdoors on the South Coast of Massachusetts. Click here for a twenty-minute video of the event. Click here to see photos of a reception held for Louv prior to the presentation. For more information on outdoor activities and events in the South Coast, go to the Southcoast Outdoor Network on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/SouthcoastOutdoorNetwork.This speech served as the inspiration for a new track YAP! is working on about sustainability.
